Background:-
I have been consuming green juice for last few years; mostly leaf greens, wheat grass.
Have tried (all purchased from Amazon) and used variety of masticating/slow juicers and have good understanding of them.
I started with vertical juicers from top most brands available in India; it could not handle wheat grass at all. Also cleaning (especially screen) was a nightmare. After watching various reviews available in U-tube; I switched over to horizontal but manual juicer; again one of the best model (while many brands available at ~ INR 500, I purchased this for INR 5K). This is the best from juice quality, ease of cleaning point of view etc. I then realized superiority of horizontal juicers. I purchased 2 more and gave to my friends. The only weakness was flimsy augur; getting bent in case of overloading.
I was in search of motorized horizontal juicer as manual juicing was tiring and time consuming; my 5 family members take green juice!
I then purchased a juicer, the only available in India then, but unused because of very high noise levels as well as flimsy looks.
I bought one Chinese juicer (~ INR 12K), was working very nicely but appeared to be flimsy as well as I had doubt on food grade compatibility of plastic material used.
Then I imported one of the best brands from Australia, and using it for last 10 months happily.
As I keep on guiding/advising my friends and relatives on green juice to successfully take care of health issues; I was looking for reasonably priced good brand available in India. Some imported from USA are available but have may have 110 V models (I read so in user reviews); also very costly.
When this was available on Amazon, I immediately purchased for trials; main reason was to suggest to others as many of them seek my advice on health issues.
First day use was a disaster and wanted return on the same day, but looking at the design, I analyzed and tweaked a little, the 2nd day trial was much better. Then I modified front cover (risking my warranty claim/return) and 3rd day trial made me very happy!!! I am sure this will be one of the best juicer in World if some design modifications are done!
Following changes I made:-
• 2nd day trail:- On the first day trial, wheat grass/ mango leave fibers accumulation at the output vent made it jammed, impossible to take out the end cover. I tried reversing/forwarding etc but in vein! I somehow struggled for pulling the fibers out with the help of plier, knife etc. I realized that the opening available for pulp was restricted. Hence on 2nd day trial I bent rubber flap of the output valve away from vent hole and kept the pulp control valve position on Low mode. I also enlarged the opening by filing carefully with needle files. The jamming of cover was avoided, however fibers ware tight to some extent. Some fibers caught between rubber and end cover body were very difficult to clean, that led me to modify further.
• 3rd day trial:- I chopped of rubber from the pulp control valve completely, enlarged the opening further. I tried to remove the pulp control valve by pulling out the knob but could not. Hence I kept it on low mode. The trial was very satisfactory!! The juice quality was better than even the imported one; also the pump was drier indication more yield. However I will test it by comparing juice produce from equal amount of carrots in both the juicers.
I suggest the following design changes to convert this juicer best in class!
• Delete the pulp control valve. For leafy greens, this is not necessary, it may help in fruit juicing but definitely not for leafy greens and grass category greens. The users of masticating juicers by mainly for leafy green juicing. This valve can be provided on another model. Many juicers have different end covers for different juicing needs. May be it can be separately sold whosoever wants; some cost reduction can be achieved!
• Increase the output valve opening (I increased by 5 mm).
• Augur:- Is ceramic augur resistant to breakage against accidental dropping, if so then the material can be changed to Tritan or Ultem. Can steel insert be molded so that the produce is squeezed between two steel inserts, one present in screen and this one on augur?
• Screen:- It looks flimsy; especially the petal like end which goes into end cover. Slight pressing them gives tic-tic sound. Can the steel insert be extended replacing petals? Don’t know what is the material, can be changed to Tritan or Ultem; as this is the most failure prone part. Additional spare part also can be supplied (I got it with the imported juicer, in spite of Ultem material).
The above are must; following can be considered:-
• Main body:- The feed tube is inclined at input side, which does not add much of a benefit. This demand taper bottom face, needing orientation fool-proofing to avoid collision with augur. The flap provided on the top of feeding tube hinders feeding of produce, making big size of the feeding tube useless. It poses problems during cleaning also. Making feeding tube vertical, deletion of this flap along with flat faced pusher will be best design. The feed tube dia can be reduced to some extent; it will result in better guiding of input produce and also more guiding/squeezing length.
Pros:
• Steel insert without holes in screen is a delight in cleaning as well as very less pulp in juice avoiding additional filtering thro’ sieve. It, along with ceramic augur also ensures absence plastic molecules in juice. This is very good feature, better than many best juicers available word wide. (pictures provided)
• Very clean juice; more yield
Cons:-
• Pulp control valve making juicer unsuitable for tough greens like wheat grass defeating whole purpose of horizontal juicer.
• Flimsy looking petal end of screen
• Ceramic augur likely to break/chip-off in case of accidental impact during cleaning/dismantling
• Flap on feed tube hinders feeding/cleaning
